Cooking has evolved from a necessary skill we learned in order to feed ourselves into a hobby, a competition, and a talent that is well respected throughout the country. No more is cooking limited to restaurants or family dinners; now, it’s become something that’s written about, voted on, photographed, and aired on national television. It’s spread beyond the pages of a cookbook and into our hearts through magazines, television, and computers, and now we can even find cooking on our phones.

With smartphones and tablets everywhere these days, the expression "there’s an app for that" has become a common part of our dialect. And as you may have guessed, there’s an app for pretty much everything that has to do with cooking. App stores for iPhones, iPads, and Androids have no shortage of recipe collection apps, apps with helpful kitchen tools, recipe box apps, how-to apps, and more, and with so many options out there, it’s hard to separate the wheat from the chaff.

There’s no need to worry, though, because we’ve turned our cooking-obsessed attention to the situation and have hand-picked a list of apps that are worthy of space on your electronic device. Starting with a list of 30 from the most-sold collection of app vendors, we studied and scored each one based on their availability (iPhone and Android?), novelty, user experience, and most importantly: practicality. Most of these apps aren’t free, so when you get past whether it works or if it looks nice, all you really need to know is whether it’s worth your dime, and we think these are.

These apps aren’t for everyone. There’s going to be some that you may not find helpful, like the Green Kitchen app if you’re a ravenous meat-eater or The Photo Cookbook if you’re especially skilled. And hey, it may not make sense for you to download Weber’s On the Grill if you don’t own a grill, but the point is that these apps come from a large collection of ones just like them, and they’re the best in their class. So whether you’re looking to organize your collection of recipes, need more guidance in the kitchen, or just want something fun to play with, these apps should be on your radar.

What’s New

Editors’ Choice

Prepare delicious meals and maximize your grocery trips with this beautifully designed cooking app. Epicurious hosts thousands of searchable recipes across a wide range of categories, and you can easily save them to an organized recipe box or generate handy shopping lists. The more we use Epicurious, the more we love its timely content, mouthwatering photos, helpful customer ratings, and overall presentation.

So handy, so good, what else do you need?

Love this app. Been an Epicurious fan for many years, long before the app came out. I love the ability to save recipes, make shopping lists, read reviews, and the ingredients/instructions flip back and forth is so easy — you’re not constantly scrolling to look at steps then amounts then steps, etc. I use this app every time I cook. I have so many favorite recipes saved in the app. Also, the videos are great and I like the meal planning ideas. I wish the app allowed me to search multi course meals or sides — sometime you get the side pairing in the recipe but often not. Other times, I’m making a 6 course meal for ten with a theme and I just wish I could search “French feast with fish” or something like that, the way you can online. Only three main challenges: 1) sometimes search queries aren’t accurate unless the search lingo is phrased just right 2)the recipes haven’t always kept up with modern techniques, like sous vide — I use sous vide all the time, and have to go elsewhere for recipes 3) you can’t post recipe reviews via mobile app — you have to go online desktop and login. if this could be fixed there’d by 10x reviews.

One of my favorite apps but.

I use this app multiple times a week. As a Bon Appetit subscriber, it’s a great way to find and save recipes from the magazine. It’s also a terrific reference and source of inspiration, especially on those ‘what’s for dinner tonight?’ days. The search tools and photography are great and help to sort through a massive database of recipes. I own over 100 cookbooks but use epicurious more than any of them.
That said, there is room for improvement. Most notably the app keeps crashing and giving me a blank white screen shortly after the initial content load since the most recent update. Also, I’m surprised that the developers have chosen to only allow reviews to be submitted through the website. I find reviews of recipes to be a very valuable feature since many of the reviewers are knowledgeable cooks, but I rarely contribute to this community because the app doesn’t allow it. Please fix the bugs and enable reviews Condé Nast!

1. Yummly: Best recipe app

Yummly

Yummly has a huge range of recipes for every diet and preference.

Reasons to Buy

Reasons to Avoid

Yummly is an app and website designed to make meal planning fun and easy. Its first step involves selecting your favorite cuisines and preferences, and you can choose anything from Irish to Moroccan depending on your tastes. It allows you to input any allergies and dietary requirements, including ovo vegetarian, paleo, and vegan. It also allows you to filter out any disliked foods, which means you won’t be bombarded with meals full of mushrooms, cilantro, or avocado unless you really want to. Something that really sets Yummly apart is its &ldquoCooking Skills&rdquo feature. Many recipe apps will assume that every user has the same level of skill, but this filter allows beginners to try their hand at entry-level meals without feeling overwhelmed.

Yummly also allows you to work on a &ldquoVirtual Pantry&rdquo where you can add any fresh or store cupboard ingredients you already have, from flour and sugar to onion and frozen peas. This allows Yummly to put together a user profile and create a bespoke shopping list as you select your meal plan. Yummly uses its own recipes, but it also features guest chefs, brands, and bloggers with recipes from Simply Ella, Betty Crocker, Beauty Bites, and more. If you’re running low on fresh food (or grocery money), there’s the option to find &ldquoPantry-Ready recipes&rdquo that you can make with what you’ve got available.

A lot of the Yummly recipes come with calorie breakdowns, which will be welcome news to dieters (but unwelcome to those who have a difficult relationship with calorie counting), and it has the option to add ingredients from recipes to a shopping list. You can also schedule the eat time for your chosen recipe, which sets up a prompt for when you need to start prepping and cooking if you want to eat at a specific time.

Yummly does have a paid option, Yummly Pro, which offers bespoke cooking courses on anything from Modern Paleo to Comfort Food Cooking with top chefs. There’s a 14-day free trial for Yummly Pro, and after that you’ll pay $4.99 for the service each month. Compared to some of the alternatives, this feels pretty reasonable.

Microsoft Outlook

Microsoft Outlook Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge

Apple’s default Mail app for email is still just plain bad. The UI is unwieldy, and support for Gmail is still poor enough that you should install a different email app instead. Outlook for iOS is still one of the best options around, with useful features, a fast UI, and Microsoft support that means it’ll be around for years to come. Plus, with iOS 14, you can even set it to replace Apple’s app as the default option.
